My frist tutoring experience

I was very nervous and panic. I went over to the professor many time even thought I knew what to do. I just want to make sure what I'm supposed to do and professor told me what I should do help me calm and be less nervous. My tutee was more relaxed then I was. I was able to tutor without showing how I was feeling. I read my tutee paper carefully. She had good summary, made connection outside the article and conclusion. I was surprised when I asked my tutee to write a summary she can write very well and finished the whole essay in few minutes less than an hour. It went really smooth. I told my tutee what to do step by step and she spend the whole time writing the paper. At the end of the session, I told her she had really good summary and she should work on making connection. She has good ideas but she need to be clear when she is writing. She took notes of my suggestions. We said to each other see you next week.

Do's and Don't's

Do's

  • Introduce yourself to tutee and learn their name
  • ask questions (what would you like to work on today?, Do you know what you want to write about?, can you start by reading out aloud your topic question?)
  • speak in normal tone of voice so tutee can hear clearly
  • brainstorm ideas by having conversation about the topic with the tutee
  • make the tutee read their own paper out aloud

Don't's 

  • do not speak in low voice
  • do not carry away when having conversation with tutee
  • do not rush the tutee when tutee isn't prepare
  • do not write the sentences for tutee
  • do not put your head down on the table when tutoring

Reading Perl’s “Understanding Composing,” has made me realized that I go through felt sense when I do my writings and doing recursiveness help organize my ideas in the writing. She said, “felt sense is when images, words, ideas, and vague fuzzy feelings that are anchored in the writer’s body.”  This is true for me. I’m aware of words and images in back of my head of my past experiences that can relate to the topic. This is also retrospective structuring because I’m using my past experience and ideas throughout my writing. When I write my paper I think about what is the answer professor is looking for and to get good grade. Perl has made this clear that projective structuring doesn’t help me to express my thoughts. I focus only on answering the questions that I think my professor will be please with. Felt sense occurs the whole time when I’m writing my papers. I’m thinking of ideas and feelings when I write.
